Riku entered the darkened lab. Dr. Sylvester’s patient appeared to be resting on the operating table. He moved the chair over to his secret hiding spot, just like he’d done so many times before. After removing the tile from the wall, he took a moment to check the battery level after he swapped out the memory card. Riku always kept a spare battery on hand, and he didn’t want to risk running out of juice at a critical moment. He determined it had enough of a charge to last a few more days. After replacing the memory chip he was about to leave when he heard rustling.

“Who are you going to sell the footage to?” a female voice said.

Roku looked around. No one was there.

I must be hearing things.

“I can help you,” the voice persisted.

The volume of the voice filled the room. Riku jumped, then dropped the tile. It shattered into a million pieces. He shone a light toward the direction of the voice. The cyborg remained on the table, restraints intact. He walked over and tested the restraints again, just to be sure. The cyborg was alert and watching his every move.

I must be exhausted—there is no way she is trying to communicate with me.

“No?” the voice asked. “But I am trying to communicate.”

“There is no way you’re talking after the sedative,” Riku said.

“I’m not talking with my mouth, but with my mind. For a smart guy you can be quite dense, but you’re kind of cute.”

“How it is possible? That you are speaking with your mind, I mean.”

“It’s a talent my sister helped me with. We share a connection, since we are twins. As far as I know, I don’t share anything with you. But, if there is anyone who can figure out why we have this connection, it’s you.”

“The doctor gave you a drug to help you sleep—you should be out cold.”

“I suspect the good doctor doesn’t know as much as he lets on. I’m still conscious, but I cannot move my body.”

“That’s incredible!” Riku said as he retested the cyborg’s restraints.

“You don’t need to worry, I wish you no harm. But I need you to do something for me.”

“I don’t know . . . Dr. Sylvester will fire me if I go behind his back. I need this job, and you are important to him.”

“I’m sure I am, but the doctor’s lust will have to wait.”

“Lust?”

“You don’t know?”

“I know I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“While you were away—fetching parts, I think—the doctor was having his way with me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry you had to endure that.”

“Thanks, Riku. You are a perfect gentleman. I need to contact my sister, but I have no way of doing so. Do you think you can get her a message?”

“Who is your sister?”

“Her name is Treeka. Tell her that her sister is in danger, and she will come looking for me.”

“I don’t even know how to contact her.”

“Before our team leader betrayed us, we received an upgrade—”

“Betrayed?” Riku interrupted.

“Yes. Nozomi had her pet shoot me point-blank in the face.
